Hi ,
Food, family, and fun. Just back home from the annual spa-girl getaway that my two sisters, Pam and Kristie find ourselves right smack dab in the middle of.
Oh, except it's kind of turning into a semi-annual affair.
Si nce Mom and Dad left their earthly lives a few years ago, we resolved to stay connected. No small feat as one of us is in Washington, another in Connecticut, and then there's lil' ol' me here in California.
This time we met up at the beautiful Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa for walks, talks, soaking up sunshine, and some serious spa time.
O h, and eats. As it turns out, there is an amazing veg restaurant smack dab right in the middle of Napa, Ubuntu, and honestly they served dishes that tasted like nothing I have EVER had before. Kristie treated us to lunch there Saturday and we had an absolute blast.
Chef Eric London (busy behind me in the kitchen, photo left) got creative with plants, produce, and grains in ways that I had absolutely NEVER tasted before. And that's surprising! You know me and food!
And as our room overlooked a gigantic golf course decorated with giant oaks and sequoias, you better believe we walked every day and I even got my Burst Training in every morning right on the greens.
More of the food theme - there's a new film premiering around the country that is all about connections between what's on our plates and our forks and the undeniable connection with health and disease. I've got a video clip for you and some facts and bits from the film.
Read all about it - and find out when it is coming to a city near you - in today's Feature Article. Oh, I've got a video clip for you, too. This film was featured on Dr. Oz just a few days back.
The spring sunshine is finally here! Hope you get some sun on your back today, too.
P.S. Body Transformation Booty Camp is underway and these women are making amazing changes in their lives through simple choices is eats and activity. A special honorary to each and all of them in today's FitDream Ezine! And be sure to catch up with Laurie in today's Raving Fans. ( I'm a big fan of yours, Laurie!)

"An easy-to-work-program - that works!"
The simple tools of a plant-strong, whole foods diet and simple activity always deliver. And it's more fun than ever when things get off to an inspiring start as they have for Laurie on Body Transformation Booty Camp. This just in....
Hi Lani!
I jumped on the scale today to see that 4 pounds have evaporated, and I haven't been hungry for a second.
Now, I know some of this is water from my pre-BTBC pig-out - but I haven't seen this number since I can't say when.
And I know that weight fluctuates and all that - but still - it's so thrilling to see results after just a couple of days! Even my mid-section looks tighter since starting with your Body Transformation Booty Camp.
Plus - I did a combination of body-toning exercises last night - that worked really well.
I had been freaking out because I didn't have the Fit Quickie's yet. So I combined some oldie-goldies toning exercises with FQ #1 and 2 and it was great.
I will definitely be investing in the Fit Quickies.
So for the first time in ages, I'm ready to stop playing around and stick with an easy-to-work program that works.
I am more motivated than ever to keep it up.
Whoo hoo!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

We hear the reports on increasing incidences of disease - and death by disease - and it can't help but register fear in our hearts.
Yet you, my dear, smart reader, already know that you can make a big difference in your health simply by what you put on your plate and into your mouth.
As a matter of fact, most of my readers are ahead of the curve on this one and can join me in celebrating the popular media finally catching up a little with what you've known for years.
Now more than ever, science suggests that by make 3 changes in your diet you can dramatically decrease your chances of suffering from cancer or heart disease.
That by eliminating certain edibles from your plate, you can prevent disease and build health with your fork instead of having to resort to surgery - with a knife.
Forks over Knives
The details are being brought to light - and life - in a brand new documentary film, Forks Over Knives, written and directed by Lee Fulkerson.
Diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity - yes, we can handle them to some degree with pills and knives.
And ain't it interesting that there are those who say ditching dairy, processed foods, meat, and oils is "extreme" yet don't use the same adjective to describe stints (blocked arteries), amputation (complications from diabetes), and open heart surgery (heart disease - again), and meds up the wazoo?
Featuring key players in the Plant-Strong Diet force, including Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and Rip Esselstyn of Engine 2 Diet fame, and the illustrious Dr. John McDougall, among others, Forks Over Knives describes in simple terms how changing what you eat can change your life.
Is it, as Dr. Oz implies, "the Hail Mary of medicine"? Dr. Oz does a snappy and superb job of presenting this groundbreaking film and the concepts are briefly yet clearly presented and demonstrated to the studio audience.
Now, I'm not always a fan of Dr. Oz, though I'm always a fan of Rip et al.
However, this time Dr. Oz modeled positive learning behaviors which raised my esteem for him. Good work Oz on such an important piece of reporting.
The Film Director's Dramatic Personal Results
Curious as to what personal results he would get, Forks Over Knives director Lee Fulkerson switched to a plant-based diet himself . Over a 12 week period, these are the dramatic changes he experienced.
Before/ After 12 weeks
Weight: 231 / 211
Blood pressure: 142:82 / 112:70
LDL cholesterol (optimal below 100) 157/ 80
Crp (C-reactive protein) 6 (optimal 3 or less) 6/ 2.8
Fulkerson used zero medications in the process. The only changes were a switch to a whole-foods, plant-based diet.
Diet and Disease
This film couldn't have come at a more serendipitous time for me; I'm at exactly the halfway point of my studies through Cornell University to obtain my Plant-Based Nutrition Certification.
Over and over again the data points to the steel-hard chains linking diet to disease.
- high protein diets (20% of calorie intake) linked to proliferation of cancer cells. But only animal protein - plant-source protein has not shown the proliferation effect.
- high fat diets (20% calorie intake, even less than that) linked to acceleration of heart disease and diabetes
- deficient fiber diets (animal product have NO dietary fiber, and most Americans get a pathetic 10 or less grams of fiber a day - we should be aiming for 40 or more) have a high correlation with colon and other digestive and elimination tract cancers
The Major Offenders
Here's the dietary big 3:
- animal protein, including meat, fish and poultry as well as eggs and dairy products (see Perils of Dairy)
- processed carbohydrat
 es
- expelled oils
A plant-based, or plant-strong diet, by contrast, is just that. The calories provided by the diet come primarily - and in many cases completely - from plant sources.
We think in terms of the new four food groups: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. Sprinkle in a few nuts and seeds. And you're there. With all the nutrition you need for a healthy, trim body.
Seeing as we currently are raising the first generation of children that may live less years than their parents due to the proliferation of diet-related diseases, this film underscores the need to sit up and take notice. To clean up our plates. It's never too late to reverse your own disease destiny either.
