a personal note from Lani                     August 12, 2010

Hi !

Imagine my surprise with the recent movie trailer that shows Julia Roberts saying "no carb left behind".

Now, I thought I'd coined that phrase for a blog post during our last trip to Italy a couple of years back.  No? OK, don't burst my bubble.

It's such an absolutely delicious phrase, isn't it?

And as one of the growing numbers of women who has broken out of carbophobia - and are healthier, trimmer, better fed and happier because of it - I can't help but revisit over and over again the concept of how to cultivate eating freedom while eating your fill.

My readers as well as the members at FitDream Fusion tell me that jotting down my eats and appetites builds their confidence in morphing their own dietary plans to one that eliminates cravings, satisfies hunger, and scoots you to your goal weight.  Read today's Feature Article and you'll see I did just that.

I've even included a recipe to one of the yummers on my menu.  My favorite kind of recipe:  only about 5 ingredients.

That's it, pictured left.  Took about 5 minutes to make.  Perfect for a busy woman who doesn't like a lot of fuss muss or bother in the kitchen but loves to eat.  Like me.

A special welcome to all of my new FitDream Ezine readers.  It's a pleasure to have you here, because along with my faithful longtime readers, it YOU for whom I write ;-).

I hope you enjoy today's issue!

Hearts, hugs and stars

What do YOU do with appetite swings?

I just go with it.

Back in the old "count, weight, measure" days, we operated on the assumption that every day would be a match energetically and with appetite.  Know what I mean?

Sorry sister, ain't the truth in real life.  Our bodies have all kinds of reasons - most which we  probably know nothing about - for swinging our appetites.

And if we eliminated or seriously made a dent in the dastardly diet-slammers such as highly processed foods, rich pastries, desserts, fiber-free dairy, and other agents of sabotage to natural fullness, then we are free to go with the appetite flow without fear of weight gain.  Trust me.

Case in Point

If it brings confidence and comfort that it IS possible to eat according to hunger and fullness signals without gaining weight endlessly and forever - and to actually use it as an effective tool to keep you trim - Ill give you an example from my eating life.  Here is my food journal - best I can recall - from the past 2 days.

Yesterday

     Breakfast:

  •  Big bowl of muesli with crispy rice cereal and flax seed, 2 kinds of peach and blueberries, splash of rice milk
Mid-morning:
  •   green plumb.  Perfect
Lunch:
  •      pile of romaine with kidney beans
  •     sandwich with 2 slices of whole grain bread with thick chunks of tomato and pickles
Afternoon.  Nothing.  (Unusual!)

Dinner:
  •     giant ear of corn
  •      pile of baby broccoli
  •      chopped tomatoes
Evening:
  •    huge slice of watermelon
Today:

Breakfast:

  •  Bowl of hot muesli, ground flax seed, fresh peaches, splash of rice milk.
Mid morning:
  •   plumb
  •      nectarine
  •     rice cake with sesame butter, and
  •     several scoops of the tabouli salad I was making for lunch.  Yeah, it almost didn't make it.  To lunch.  The tabouleh I mean. Click HERE for my easy tabouleh recipe.
Lunch:
  •     pile of baby spinach with big scoop of tabouleh with garbanzos all over the top
  •     sandwich with 2 slices of whole grain bread with thick chunks of tomato and pickles
Afternoon:
  •      no hunger until dinner, as well satisfied in the morning
Dinner:
  •      corn on the cob
  •      cauliflower with veggie chorizo
  •      bruschetta of chopped tomato on wholegrain bread
Later:
  •     huge bowl of watermelon chunks

So, what's with the appetite shifts?

Who knows. Both days I took a long leisurely morning walk.

Yesterday I did my Bar Method workout after the walk.

Today I did Fit Quickie #1 and #3, then 15 minutes of Burst Training following the walk.  Clearly close on energy needs.

Here's the point

The point is, when you are a body-controlled eater - that's eating according to hunger signals until satisfied - you are home free and safe in the slim zone if you select to eat from whole, natural, high fiber low fat foods.  You'll be satisfied and you'll be happily lean at the same time.  It's another chapter in my Big Plate Trick for Staying Slim saga.

For many women
, eating to appetite presents huge walls of fear.  I understand.  That used to be me, too.

But after a dozen years of letting my body prove its wisdom - and trusting the appetite surges while taking excellent care of the quality of food I eat - I'm good to go with this.

If this is part of YOUR fitness dream too, stick with me.  Happy to blaze the tasty trail on this one!
