a personal note from Lani                     August 26, 2010

Hi !

I never thought I'd say this, but when I've become a fan of MLB. That's Major League Baseball, for those not in the know, which would have been me one short month ago.

It was upon a recent visit to Greg's Dad (that's us in the photo below right, at a birthday celebration not long ago), a solid baseball fan since forever, that we got re-hooked on the game.  Pop somehow got us looped back in.

Now, I grew up a San Francisco Giant's fan, frequenting Candlestick Park to cheer on the magic of Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, and all the other golden greats.

I even played softball in junior high, threw a few mean pitches myself and bore the badge of slide-ins with perpetual cuts and scratches on my knees and palms.  But as a "grown up", when asked what team I was rooting for, I'd often have to counter with "to which sport do you refer?"  Fortunately for me, Greg has not been a big sports fan either, so no Monday-night widow me.

And fortunately as well, we've both been bit with the baseball bug by his dad at the same time.

As many of you know, sadly, last week Pop, mightily pushing 98, passed away peacefully after a short illness.  He's been the family role model, never complaining about the aches, pains, discomforts, and indignities of an aging body.  Heck, he has even had a beautiful girlfriend 3 years his younger these past several years.  Who could be so lucky?  But with his charming disposition, is it any wonder?

Of course I'm certain that one of the reasons Pop was in such good shape well into ten decades was that he had a regular workout schedule for most of that time.  For years, when visiting them, he and I would together scramble over to the gym near their home in San Rafael to pump some iron, run some treadmill, and stretch.

So, it is to him that this issue of FitDream Ezine is dedicated.  And with, as you can imagine, multiple family commitments over the coming week, and time being of the essence, today's Feature Article is a fitting archive goldie:  "Six Fitness Success Strategies to Start NOW", in honor of a powerful fitness role model, my father-in-law.

Take me out to the ballgame!

Hearts, hugs and stars

Six Fitness Success Strategies To Start NOW
by Lani Muelrath, M.A.

Truth be told, yes, exercise and nutrition are KEY to fitness success.

Yet there are other essential pieces to put into place for long term weight loss, energy, and staying in the winner's circle when it comes to fitness!

Here are 6 fitness success strategies - to start NOW!

1.  Consistency:the key for long term success

If you know me, you know that I DO have a slightly different perspective on this rule.  About consistency, that is.  Because it may be that you are VERY consistent - at not following through with your fitness and health objectives!  Whatever you are now "getting" with your health and fitness goals, it is a product of whatever practices with which you are currently being consistent!  Am I right?  Change the objectives and follow through, be consistent about that, and an entirely NEW result will be yours.

2.  Hang around with people you want to be like

The most successful people I know in any personal venture or avenue of business make it a point to surround themselves with people who are not only aspiring for what they would like to achieve, but who are being successful at it as well.  With internet, online group, and email connections, it is easier than ever to find others who are moving in the same direction of health and fitness as you.  If we find ourselves constantly falling short of our daily goals, it may be worthwhile to look around and see the energy and fitness focus of those whom we spend most of our time with.

Of course, this doesn't mean you need to "drop" those friends.  It does mean that it is also going to benefit you to connect with people who are being successful at what you want to achieve, too.

Everyone has experienced the value of an exercise buddy - it can be as simple as that, for a start.

3.  Remember: ups and downs are a part of the process

In my work as holistic fitness coach, I can't tell you HOW many times perfectionism rears its ugly head and precipitates a "fitness crash".  Making exceptions and excuses is one thing, but being obsessive and compulsive about each minute of exercise and each morsel of food never produces lasting results...and happiness!  Find the strategies and connections that keep you on track and invest your resources there.

4.  Model others who have what you want and are already doing that to which you aspire

I bet that some images and/or names popped into your head as soon as you read #4.  If not, then it may be one of the obstacles to your progress!  Role models are powerful allies in our quest for success.  I know that personally, finding someone who "has what I wanted" proved to be powerful medicine for moving my success forward.

No need to reinvent the wheel - there are pathways to fitness, health, and outlook success.  Find those who already embody that to which you aspire, and watch what they do, learn from their experience!

5.   Realize that effort and hard work are going to be part of the game

If the days
you follow through on  "I don't feel like eating right" or "I don't feel like exercising today" outnumber the days that you follow through on your health and well-being plans, then I don't have to tell YOU what kind of results that you will get!

Remember that what you do 90% of the times is what is going to deliver your results.  Yes, there are multiple strategies available to help you stay on track, which brings us to....

6.  Find a coach or mentor to get faster, longer last results.

My friend Ali Brown, a wildly successful business entrepreneur, has powerful words about this:

I don't know of any champion who got to where he/she did alone. [For example], every bodybuilding competitor hires a trainer or a coach who has been there before and can walk them through every step of the way. Does this cost them a lot of money? You bet. But they don't look at what it costs. They look at what it's WORTH. They're fast forwarding their success, and that is priceless.

We have years of habituated thinking and behavior that is giving us the results we have today.  Some of this is working for us, and some of it obviously creates blocks to achieving our desired dreams.  Having a successful and experienced pro illuminate the path and connect us with the champion within can be worth every penny - and minute - spent! This I have found to be true from personal experience, and I continue to get coaching in areas of expertise that I wish to grow - from those who know.  Stop struggling and reach for a hand up.

Step UP to success!
